Details

A printed fin blade that is supported by a structural stainless steel rod/ projecting through a trunking running from the deck to the hull bottom. The blade is designed to use a support and fixing system for the ballast similar to that used on A Class, ref INS-080.

Price is for a fin blade sized for ROMANZA which varies a little form the plan. The current design varies in detail from the images here but is the same in concept. Custom fins by quotation based on your drawing/specification.

Finishing the blade

The ballast is supported on the lower end of the stainless steel strut. The blade is printed in a black carbon infused PET-G. The fin has 8 mm diameter carbon rods bonded through it and protruding from the top to minimise twist and provide fore and aft location into the flanges that are bonded into the hull fore and aft of the strut trunking. Abrading the fin with 400 grade wet and dry, followed by 600 and 800 grade is recommended to obtain a suitable finish.

Fitting to the boat

The need for a fin box is eliminated. A strut trunking is bonded into the hull, attached to the underside of the deck and the inside of the hull, supporting the strut through the hull. The strut tapers from maximum diameter of 11 mm at the hull bottom to 6 mm at the top and 8 mm at the bottom to minimise weight and flexing. Flanges are bonded into the hull fore and aft of the strut trunking which locate the 8 mm carbon rods protruding from the upper end of the fin.

This development seems to simplify and reduce the work required to install a fin (and the ballast) in a 6M. The cost of making and adding the fin box, the time taken to go from a fin moulding to a finished fin, and the issues associated with making the fin watertight are all eliminated.
