A printed fin blade that is designed to be supported by a structural carbon rod/tube projecting through a trunking running from the deck to the hull bottom. The blade is designed to use our normal support and fixing system for the ballast, ref INS-080.

The fin blade is shaped to the profile on the ROMANZA drawing and has a hole running from top to bottom through which the structural carbon rod/tube runs. The weight of the blade is about 190 grams.

Finishing the blade

The carbon rod/tube used to support the ballast is a series of carbon tubes bonded together and which may be bonded into the fin. The ballast is intended to be supported on our usual 6 mm steel studding and stub arrangement, ref INS-080 which provides a secure support. The weight of the carbon tubes is about 45 grams. The weight of INS-080 is about 75 grams. The blade is printed in black Nylon. Abrading the fin with 400 grade wet and dry, followed by 600 and 800 grade is recommended to obtain a suitable finish.

Fitting to the boat.

The need for a fin box is eliminated. A shallow recess is formed in the hull bottom over the upper edge of the fin blade - made by cutting an aperture in the hull bottom to match the top section of the blade, placing the fin blade in the aperture and laminating expoxy/carbon over the top. Release agent has to be applied to the upper part of the blade. A 14 mm ID tube is bonded into the hull from the deck to the shallow recess in the hull bottom to form a watertight trunking.

Trim tab

The system makes a trim tab relatively easy to engineer. The price quoted is for a 20% tab on the ROMANZA fin.

This development seems to simplify and reduce the work required to install a fin (and the ballast) in a 6M. The cost of making and adding the fin box, the time taken to go from a fin moulding to a finished fin, and the issues associated with making the fin watertight are all eliminated.
