Two alternatives to our standard pot are available.

Plate, recess and lid - for access only

A 130 x 100 mm plate with a 20 mm deep recess for the threaded rim and screw top lid. No pot. This unit provides a perfect seal between the screw top lid and the plate - it is intended the plate will be recessed into the deck and either bonded in permanently or sealed in place with silicone sealant or tape. The lid is the same lid as used for our standard pot and is supplied with the moulding. This unit is intended to be used to give access to the inside of the hull and provides no containment for rc equipment.

Plate, recess and lid - for adding pot

A 130 x 100 mm plate with a 20 mm deep recess for the lid. The underside is shaped to allow one of our standard pots to be fixed using silicone sealant and screws. Pot not included. This unit provides a perfect seal between the screw top lid and the plate - it is intended the plate will be recessed into the deck and either bonded in permanently or sealed in place with silicone sealant or tape. The lid is the same lid as used for our standard pot and is supplied with the moulding. The inside of the moulding has two clips near the top that will hold the aerial fitting AER-ARC in place.

Please note

None of the pots has any hole(s) for entry/exit of cables. Large diameter drills do not work well on thin plastic and may crack the pot. Use a soldering iron to make hole(s) to suit the cables and plugs where preferred. Do this in a well ventilated space and avoid inhaling the fumes. Use Blutack to seal the hole after the cables are in place.

Avoiding leaks - The upper rim of the pot has some residual roughness created in the moulding process. To allow a first class seal of the lid against the rim it should be abraded with 400 or 600 grade wet and dry abrasive paper to remove all roughness and create a smoothly rounded upper edge. Note that damage to the seal can also permit water to enter the pot. Replace the seal as a precaution against this. The lid and seal are available as separate items, ref. 054L.

Conformity with the IOM class rules - An interpretation given on the IOM class rules has established that dye, even though it is not specifically mentioned as a permitted material in the class rules, is actually permitted in thermoplastic. On this basis these parts are fully compliant with the IOM class rules.

The manufacturing process used for the alternative parts permits the possibility of creating custom versions to suit your project. Different sizes of plate, sizes and shapes of pot and recess can be catered for - please enquire.

Replacement of an existing pot - Pots may become brittle with age and develop cracks which lead to leakage. To replace the pot successfully please observe the following tips:

Remove all the existing pot and silicone sealant that has adhered to the pot recess moulding. Abrade the pot recess moulding where the replacement pot will be in contact and clean that area with acetone. Silicone sealant does not seal very well with the material our pots are made from so we overcome this by adding a wrap of deck patch material around the pot where it will be in contact with the deck moulding. Ensure the fit of the pot is good without any distortion before attempting to seal the pot in place. The correct silicone sealant to use is the one that smells strongly of acetic acid (vinegar). Choose the clear version. No other types will work. The one we have in the workshop is a B&Q product labelled ‘translucent all purpose, waterproof, flexible, mould resistant’. The instructions/data printed on the package indicate it gives off acetic acid when curing. Buy the 310 ml size. Mask all the external areas of the pot that will not be in contact with the pot recess using masking tape or deck patch material. Leave tabs/tags at the end of each piece to facilitate removal. Apply the sealant to both surfaces where they will touch and push the pot into place. Remove excess sealant and allow to cure. Do not remove the protective tapes until completing the following step. When cured, add 2 or 3 screws through the pot and into the pot recess moulding so that the lid can be firmly screwed in place without disrupting the seal between pot and deck. Remove the protective tapes.
