For simplicity it is attractive to use straight headsail booms for Marblehead, 10 Rater, 6 Metre and A Class. But we have found sometimes we need to make the booms ‘bent’. One reason is to allow the foot of a Marblehead sail to have the free area that can be added as a foot roach. The other reason is to allow the boom to be really close to the deck but to avoid the forward end hitting the deck edge when sheeted out where the deck is flat. The joiner is made to give 15 degrees of ‘bend’.

The joiners for 10 mm and 12 mm Ø tube are alternatives to items 19-100 and 19-120 made of carbon epoxy.

See also item ref. 101M for use with the SAILSetc boom spar section.

When using mast/boom spar joiners

  • Prepare alloy tubes and joiners by cleaning all matching surfaces with solvent (acetone, alcohol).
  • Prepare carbon tubes and joiners by thoroughly abrading and cleaning all matching surfaces with solvent (acetone, alcohol).
  • Use normal 24 hours epoxy resin, thickened as necessary to prevent the resin from draining out of poor fitting joints before curing, and ensure the parts are correctly aligned during cure.
  • Simplify cleaning by allowing the resin to partly cure between 1 and 3 hours, depending on temperature, then use solvent to clean off the excess resin from the joints. Check alignment again before allowing to fully cure.

Carbon tow wetted out with epoxy resin should be wrapped around the joined ends of carbon tubes for additional reinforcement in highly stressed spars. Alternatively use the SAILSetc boom bands, items 048, 104 or 106 placed at the ends of the tubes at the join to add reinforcement.
