Model Sailing Yachts - re-print of the second printing of the first edition of the Percival Marshall 1905 book. 132 pages. With an introduction by Russell Potts. A4 format. Contains much information about the construction of hulls, sails and fitting used at the time which may be of value to anyone restoring a vintage model or wishing to re-create any boat using the same techniques. This Curved Air Press reprint is, rather, a re-creation of the reprint created in 2001 by Russell Potts as a facsimile of the second printing of the first edition of Percival Marshall’s Model Sailing Yachts, which was first published in 1905. To present the text and illustrations in a more acceptable quality it was felt necessary to take the time to produce a new document, with a little help from modern technology, and to insert scans of the original illustrations. Why bother, when the content is over a century out of date? Several reasons – the book was a seminal work in its day and remains a source of material for those involved with the preservation and restoration of older model sailing yachts. It contains fairly extensive coverage of the rating rules of the day, given a book of this size. The view that the Linear Rating Rule was already obsolete will bring a smile to any ardent 10 Rater sailors of today and serves to illustrate how robust some concepts are when they find the right environmental niche.
