The output pin that engages with the tiller arm can be adjusted to be from 15 mm to 50 mm from the vane gear main axis. Weight without feather is about 150 grams for the large and 100 grams for the small. The port and starboard tacking angles can be adjusted independently to values between 10 degrees and 40 degrees. The dial is clearly graduated in 2 degree intervals and the fine tipped tacking angle pointer allows accurate settings to be achieved and repeated. The large has a 2.5 mm Ø pin to engage with the tiller arm, the small has a 2.0 mm Ø pin.

The design of the component parts and the instructions will allow anyone with average Lego/Meccano skills to complete the vane gear from the kit of parts with a limited range of tools and other materials.

Two packs are required make up the full kit: Pack 1 comprises the printed parts only, with holes to receive screws tapped where required. Pack 2 comprises the remainder of the parts required. Not included in either pack;- pintle, vane feather, tiller arm.
