Mast ram insert - M3 or M4
Details
Mast ram insert - M3 or M4.
M3 version
10 mm Ø with captive M3 Nyloc nut. Supplied with M3 x 16 mm socket head screw.
Designed to be inserted into the mast of a Marblehead or Ten Rater rig and to provide a M3 socket head screw mast ram. Typically used on NIOUTRAM rigs.
Designed to work with our 12B goosenecks that have been modified by cutting away the gooseneck body to allow the socket head screw to work as a mast ram. The major benefit of having the mast ram captive on the mast is that there is no need to adjust it each time the rig is added to the boat.
The mast diameter for the 12B goosenecks is 14 mm. A length of 12 mm OD x 10 mm ID tube should be inserted into the mast spanning the gooseneck position to provide reinforcement at this point of maximum stress. The mast ram insert is sized to fit inside that piece of reinforcement.
Also fits inside most IOM 11 mm Ø masts to provide a M3 mast strut/deck fitting attachment.
To fit the mast ram insert:
Ensure the Nyloc nut is placed with the lock part outwards. Bond the nut in place using cyanoacrylate glue. Leave to dry properly before proceeding. Make a positioning tool by adding a short length of M3 studding, or M3 screw with the head removed, to the end of a piece of timber or metal long enough to place the mast ram insert where required. Screw the mast ram insert onto the end of the tool. Position the mast ram insert and adjust so that the nut aligns with a 3 mm Ø hole drilled where required in the mast. Add the M3 socket head screw. This will be difficult as the lock part of the lock nut is outwards - use a M3 tap or taper the end of an M3 screw and use it to open up the thread in the nut. When the mast adjuster screw is in place you can unscrew the tool. Drill a 1 mm diameter hole close to and vertically above or below the M3 socket head screw into which a piece of 1 mm stainless steel wire should be pressed.
M4 version
10 mm Ø x 7 mm long stainless steel, tapped through M4. The same item as used in item INS-040. Appropriate for use with our M4 mast rams, items 140T.
